Reddit While there has been much focus on the language learner in SLA research, the teacher's significance in the learning equation has generally been given short shrift. The new book, Language teacher psychology, edited by Mercer and Kostoulas, attempts to rectify this problem by providing a composite picture of current research on teacher psychology and ambitiously carving out a path for future research. The book makes the solid and persuasive case for a deeper understanding of teacher psychology as essential not only in relation to learner outcome, but because teachers themselves deserve their professional dignity regarded, their viewpoints validated, their agency respected, and their voices and concerns heeded. The book is arranged into three main sections with a foreword by Dornyei, and introductory and concluding chapters by Mercer and Kostoulas. Chapters 2—7 cover aspects of teacher psychology which are more established and well known, such as cognition and motivation. Chapters 13—17 consider key tenets of positive psychology, which is steadily gaining traction in SLA research. Each chapter segues seamlessly into the next, culminating in the concluding Chapter 19 which serves as a reaffirming validation of language teacher psychology and a rallying call for future research. In the foreword, Dornyei explains several complicating empirical challenges that have contributed to the lack of solid research on teacher psychology.

Very well written and structured. A psychology of learning from social constructivist point of view. That is to learn adjusting to our personal meaning and values and also learn from social interactions.

Also, I like the notion on learning foreign language is to adapt to that culture, and also about strategies, metacognition, that is learning about learning. Essential for teachers.
